The third graders in Mr. Salsich's class at Deans Mill School in Connecticut, USA made their own sled kites! We learned a lot about measuring, division, fractions, and teamwork while building our kites.

"Making Math Fly"

We also learned about the history of kites. Did you know that kites have been used for over two thousand years? That was how long ago people in China started to use silk and bamboo to make the first kites. Around the same time, people in the islands of the Pacific Ocean used leaf kites for fishing. The kites helped them catch fish that were far away or would get scared by a boat. They would attach a line and hook to the tail of the kite and fly it so the bait dangled in and out of the water. People still use kites for fishing today.
